Maingi said officers trailed the kidnappers from Murang’a town at about 8.30pm until when they intercepted them at Mathioya-river while attempting to exchange vehicles and number plates. During the rescue, the gangsters opened fire after being ordered to surrender hence forcing the police to retaliate. During the exchange three gangsters were killed and three others fled carrying what is suspected to be a bag of weapons.
Police seized an AK47 rifle, a toy pistol and two vehicles the suspects had been using.
